The debut feature film Shape of Momo, directed by Tribeny Rai, is slated for an Indian theatrical release on May 29, 2026. The film, a winner at the Busan film festival, has secured distribution support from Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media.
This venture marks a significant moment for independent, creator-driven cinema in India, with Spirit Media actively championing such narratives. The studio's involvement underscores a commitment to bringing distinct, lived-in perspectives to wider audiences.
Film's Narrative and Artistic Backing
Set against the backdrop of a Himalayan village in Sikkim, Shape of Momo explores the intergenerational dynamics of a single family. It delves into themes of inherited emotions, concealed histories, and the daily lives of its female characters. The ensemble cast includes Bhanu Maya Rai, Gaumaya Gurung, Pashupati Rai, Rahul Mukhia, and Shyamashree Sherpa.
"Shape of Momo is a quietly powerful film that gently unfolds and stays with you," stated Rana Daggubati. "At Spirit, we’re drawn to stories that are deeply rooted in their world and told with emotional honesty, and Shape of Momo really reflects that."
The film also benefits from the support and recognition of established figures in Indian cinema. Payal Kapadia, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti have been noted as being involved with the film, lending further gravitas to its release. Rai expressed her gratitude for Kapadia's championship, recognizing her role in opening avenues for Indian filmmakers, particularly women.

Spirit Media's Growing Influence
Spirit Media, under Rana Daggubati, has been progressively establishing itself as a platform for independent filmmaking. The studio's slate includes diverse projects, such as the Hindi adaptation of Aravind Adiga's 'Last Man in Tower' and Dulquer Salmaan's 'Kaantha.' Recently, Spirit Media also acquired the India rights for Payal Kapadia's Cannes Grand Prix winner, 'All We Imagine as Light', and distributed other acclaimed independent films like 'Sabar Bonda'. This broader engagement indicates a strategic effort to foster a creative home for independent producers and to nurture collaborative storytelling across various industries and languages.

"We love watching stories from across India, stories that bring distinct, lived-in perspectives and expand the world of Indian cinema," said Zoya Akhtar, highlighting the value Spirit Media places on diverse regional narratives. Reema Kagti added that Rai's film is "made with sensitivity, warmth and emotional insight. She has a refreshing distinct voice as a filmmaker."
The release of Shape of Momo on May 29 is presented as a significant milestone, particularly given the challenges independent films often face in securing theatrical distribution. Rai described the support from Spirit Media as surreal and rewarding, emphasizing the studio's role in creating space for creator-driven cinema.
