Sektori, the acclaimed arcade-style shooter, is finally providing its solo developer, Kimmo Lahtinen, with a living wage, attributed to its recent launch on the Nintendo Switch 2. This marks a significant turn after nearly five years of the game’s release.
The game, lauded as one of 2025's best, struggled to recoup costs after its initial debut on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Only with the Nintendo Switch 2 release has Lahtinen been able to draw a salary.
Initially launched in late 2025, Sektori garnered critical praise for its fast-paced, kaleidoscopic visuals and techno soundtrack, drawing heavy inspiration from Geometry Wars. However, sales from its earlier platforms were insufficient to cover development costs and living expenses for Lahtinen, a former Housemarque veteran. He had previously stated in January of this year that the game had only just managed to recoup indirect costs and overheads.

The success on the Switch 2 is seen as a pivotal moment for the independent title. Lahtinen himself has expressed immense satisfaction with the game’s design, stating that it has taught him the most about pure game design thus far, and he holds few regrets about its development. The Switch 2 version of Sektori includes features like customizable power-up decks and varied game modes, building upon its core mechanics.
The broader context includes Nintendo’s strategic shift towards its new console. Reports indicate Nintendo is increasingly focusing development on the Switch 2, potentially reducing cross-generational titles and acquiring more studios to bolster its internal development capabilities. This platform-centric approach appears to be creating new opportunities for games like Sektori to find their audience and financial footing.
