Over ₹99,000 in railway materials were recovered and two individuals apprehended in a theft case in Hassan, as reported recently.
In a parallel development, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) across various divisions has reported a series of arrests and seizures of stolen property. This includes:
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR): Between April 13 and 16, RPF teams conducted operations leading to multiple arrests and the recovery of stolen mobile phones. A suspect on Train No. 15930 Down was intercepted on April 13, with a mobile phone valued at approximately ₹40,000 recovered. On the same date, a suspect at Guwahati Railway Station was apprehended with a stolen phone of comparable value. On April 16, RPF personnel at New Bongaigaon Railway Station detained an individual with a stolen phone worth around ₹10,000. Katihar Railway Station saw an arrest with a stolen handset valued at approximately ₹15,000.
Central Railway: In early December 2025, RPF personnel resolved a theft case within three days, apprehending a prime accused, Mahesh Lingayat, for his involvement in a robbery near Jalgaon. The incident on September 20 aboard Train No 12167 LTT–Banaras Express involved the theft of gold ornaments worth around ₹3 lakh. In separate operations, RPF and GRP busted a theft gang in the Igatpuri–Kasara Ghat section and cracked a case in the Solapur division, recovering gold jewellery, mobile phones including an iPhone, and cash exceeding ₹1.5 lakh.
Secunderabad Railway Station: On April 17, RPF apprehended Mohammed Muzammil, 25, in connection with a theft case. An associate, Varthyavath Ammu alias Tharun, 21, is reported absconding.
Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station: A joint team of RPF, GRP, and the Crime Intelligence Branch detected a theft case involving gold ornaments worth ₹5.07 lakh. One person was arrested in connection with the incident that occurred on January 25.
Coimbatore Yard: On September 27, 2025, the RPF arrested seven individuals for allegedly stealing railway coach materials.
Broader Picture
The RPF's efforts to recover stolen property and apprehend offenders appear to be ongoing. For instance, in February 2026, under ‘Operation Yatri Suraksha,’ RPF arrested 40 individuals and recovered stolen property valued at ₹22.05 lakh across 41 cases. Concurrently, ‘Operation Rail Suraksha’ identified 31 cases of railway property theft, recovering ₹4.06 lakh in assets. Further, ‘Operation Satark’ seized liquor worth ₹1.65 lakh, and ‘Operation Uplabdh’ targeted touts, leading to 15 arrests and the seizure of 69 tickets worth ₹1.49 lakh.
In past years, significant recoveries have been noted. In 2023, RPF recovered stolen railway property worth ₹12.48 crore, arresting 12,099 offenders. In 2022, stolen railway property worth ₹7.37 crore was recovered with 11,268 offenders arrested. Between 2017-18, railway police recovered stolen property worth ₹2.93 crore and arrested 6,603 individuals.

The RPF states its mandate includes safeguarding railway property, protecting passengers, preventing trafficking, and assisting children in need. However, reports from 2018 indicated a staff shortage within the RPF, with approximately 67,000 personnel against a sanctioned strength of 74,456, potentially impacting the regularity of anti-theft drives.
