Kochi, Kerala - Senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Prakash Karat has articulated a pragmatic, if controversial, stance on potential electoral alignments in Kerala, stating that there is "nothing wrong" if the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) offers support to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) as a "tactical move."

Karat’s comments suggest a flexible approach to electoral mathematics, wherein the LDF would not actively seek out or form an understanding with the SDPI, but would not reject support if offered as part of the SDPI's own strategy. This assertion, however, runs counter to a resolution passed at the CPI(M) Party Congress last year, which explicitly named the Jamaat-e-Islami, Welfare Party of India, and SDPI, barring the CPI(M) from any engagement with them. Karat emphasized that unlike the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), which he claims has sought support from the Welfare Party, the LDF has not initiated discussions or formed any alliances with these groups.

Political Maneuvering Amidst Allegations
The statement comes as the political landscape in Kerala heats up for the upcoming Assembly elections. Karat also pushed back against allegations that the Left in Kerala is being lenient with the BJP-RSS, dismissing such claims as "cheap politics" by the Congress. He asserted that the CPI(M) does not require validation from Congress leadership on how to counter the BJP and RSS.

Karat highlighted the LDF government's track record, noting that the Pinarayi Vijayan-led administration has established a record in pursuing "alternative policies" against the Modi government.

Internal Discontent and External Critiques
Meanwhile, the electoral field shows signs of fluidity. A former left-backed independent MLA, Razack, has rejoined the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key UDF constituent. Razack cited a "disconnect" within the LDF and a feeling of being sidelined as reasons for his return to the IUML.

The opposition, including the Congress, has raised concerns, with allegations surfacing about potential understandings between the LDF and the BJP. Karat, however, maintains that the LDF will not shield anyone involved in controversies such as the Sabarimala gold scam case. He also directed criticism towards US President Donald Trump, framing global far-right governments, including India's, as targeting minorities and immigrants, labeling the RSS's Hindutva ideology as "neo-fascism."
Electoral Preparations and Party Lineups
The political parties are actively preparing for the elections, with various fronts releasing candidate lists and manifestos. The CPI(M) and CPI have released their initial lists, alongside other constituent parties of the LDF. The UDF, led by the Indian National Congress, and the National Democratic Alliance, spearheaded by the BJP, are also in the process of finalizing their candidates and campaign strategies.

The electoral dynamics are further complicated by claims from organizations like SC/ST organizations, which allege neglect by Left parties and indicate their support for the UDF. Conversely, the LDF has accused the IUML of influencing voters with incentive offers.
