A Bearhawk LSA-8X aircraft tipped onto its roof during a landing attempt at Cape Cod Gateway Airport in Hyannis on Thursday afternoon. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m., necessitated a temporary shutdown of airport operations.
The pilot, the sole occupant of the privately-owned experimental aircraft, sustained only minor injuries. Emergency responders, including Hyannis firefighters and Barnstable police, were on scene and managed to contain a small fuel leak before it could spread. Airport operations resumed approximately 45 minutes after the crash, around 4:15 p.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the overturn. Investigators are expected to review aircraft registration and maintenance records as part of their process. A preliminary statement from the FAA is anticipated on the next business day.
The flight had originated from Falmouth Airport and was attempting to land on Runway 24 on the south side of the airport when the incident took place. The airport, located at 480 Barnstable Road, handles a mix of commercial and general aviation traffic.
