Party Expels Former MLA, Cites "Mistakes"
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has formally expelled P.K. Sasi, a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and ex-Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) chairman, from its primary membership. The expulsion, announced by the Palakkad district committee, follows Sasi's alleged participation in a "rebel convention" where he reportedly made "disparaging remarks against the district leadership."

The expulsion signifies a significant fracture within the party ranks, stemming from public criticisms leveled by Sasi against local leadership. This move underscores the party's disciplinary stance against internal dissent, particularly when it manifests publicly.

A Conditional Olive Branch?
Despite the expulsion, a glimmer of possibility for Sasi's return has been articulated by some CPI(M) leaders. E.N. Suresh Babu, the District Secretary, has stated that Sasi "can return to party if he corrects mistakes." This conditional opening suggests that the door is not entirely shut, provided Sasi offers a satisfactory resolution to the perceived transgressions.

Other leaders have been less forgiving. N.N. Krishnadas, a State committee member, highlighted the extensive support and "care from the party" that Sasi had previously received, implying a sense of betrayal. Meanwhile, Chenthamarakshan alleged that Sasi had a tendency to "malign anyone who did not support him," painting a picture of Sasi as a difficult figure within the party structure.

Legal Repercussions Loom
Adding another layer to this unfolding drama, Suresh Babu indicated his consideration of "legal action against Mr. Sasi" for allegations made against him. A decision on this matter is expected following consultations with the district leadership, potentially escalating the conflict beyond internal party politics.
Background of Estrangement
Sasi's current predicament appears to be the culmination of a period of estrangement. Reports suggest he had been "largely aloof from the party" after being "stripped of various posts." His decision to participate in the rebel convention in Palakkad served as the immediate catalyst for his expulsion, bringing his long association with the CPI(M) to a critical juncture.
