The US Department of Defense has appointed Elias Irizarry, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge related to the January 6 Capitol breach, to a position within its Office of Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict. This office is involved in handling highly classified military operations. The appointment has reportedly generated concern among Pentagon officials.

Irizarry's duties are said to fall within a counterterrorism and irregular warfare team of about 40 individuals. These responsibilities are described as covering areas such as embassy security, personnel recovery, and hostage rescue. It is understood that positions within this office necessitate a top-secret security clearance.

At the time of the January 6 events, Irizarry was 19 years old and a student at The Citadel, a military college in Charleston, South Carolina. He was later discharged from the institution due to his involvement. Legal records indicate that prosecutors stated he entered the Capitol through a broken window, carrying a metal pole, though he did not strike anyone. His case involved a plea agreement, leading to a two-week jail sentence for entering and remaining in a restricted government area.

Irizarry has since graduated from The Citadel. Reports suggest he expressed remorse for his actions and apologized to victims' families. His conviction was for a misdemeanor charge. Some accounts note he has run for public office and received a presidential pardon during the Trump administration. He is described as one of the younger defendants in the January 6 cases. The appointment is understood to be a political appointment.
