Shifting Sands in Trinity League Football
Orange Lutheran High School has appointed Ray Fenton as its new head football coach, a move signaling a significant personnel change for the program. Fenton arrives from Los Alamitos High School, where he led the Griffins to a CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship in the most recent season, concluding with a 12-3 record. His tenure at Los Alamitos spanned ten seasons, accumulating an 80-33 win-loss record, and included a CIF Southern California Regional game appearance after their championship win.

Experience and Acknowledgment
Fenton’s career, spanning over four decades across California, Arizona, and Nevada, is marked by numerous coaching accolades. He has previously earned state and regional coach-of-the-year distinctions, and at River Valley High School in Arizona, he guided the program to consecutive Top 5 state rankings. His appointment at Orange Lutheran is immediate, with preparations for the upcoming season underway. The school’s head of athletics stated Fenton brings "a strong commitment to mentoring student-athletes in both their athletic development and personal growth."

Context of the Trinity League
The addition of Fenton occurs within the competitive landscape of the Trinity League, a conference featuring formidable programs such as Mater Dei and St. John Bosco, along with the defending CIF Southern Section Division 1 champion Santa Margarita. Orange Lutheran itself achieved a notable upset against St. John Bosco in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs last year, reaching the semifinals before their defeat by eventual champion Santa Margarita. Fenton’s experience with high-profile athletes is therefore seen as a relevant factor.
A Departure from Precedent
The hiring of Fenton, who also had a stint coaching at Cypress, suggests a shift from Orange Lutheran's prior coaching strategies. This transition follows a disappointing 3-9 season for the Lancers, which included two forfeited games due to the use of an ineligible player. Reports indicate that former Orange Lutheran quarterback Aaron Corp, ex-Mater Dei coach Frank McManus, and former Servite coach Troy Thomas were among those considered for the position. The announcement of Fenton’s appointment was made concurrently with other coaching changes in the region, including Dean Herrington being named head coach at St. Bernard.
