NEWARK, NJ - A United Airlines aircraft, en route from Venice, Italy, encountered a light pole affixed to the New Jersey Turnpike during its final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, May 3rd. The collision, which occurred around 2:00 PM, resulted in damage to the light pole and a tractor-trailer truck traveling on the highway below.
The United Flight 169 clipped the overhead structure, causing debris to impact a southbound tractor-trailer. The driver of the truck, identified as Warren Boardley of Baltimore, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The aircraft, however, managed to land without further incident, taxied to its gate normally, and reported only minor damage. No passengers or crew aboard the flight were injured.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and officials from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority were reportedly on site, initiating inspections and evidence collection. Port Authority Police and New Jersey State Police also responded to the scene on the Turnpike.

Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill acknowledged the incident, stating she had been briefed on the events involving United Flight 169.
This occurrence follows a separate incident involving a United Airlines flight at Newark Liberty International Airport within the preceding 24 hours, where a different flight was compelled to declare an emergency due to an unruly passenger. The aircraft in question was reportedly aiming for Runway 29 at the time of the intersection with the light pole.
