Meta Platforms has struck a deal with startup Overview Energy, securing up to 1 gigawatt of capacity from a novel system designed to beam solar energy collected in space directly to ground-based facilities. The partnership aims to circumvent the inherent limitations of terrestrial solar power by providing a constant, around-the-clock energy supply, independent of diurnal cycles or weather.
The core of Overview Energy's proposal involves a constellation of satellites positioned in geosynchronous orbit, approximately 22,000 miles above Earth. These satellites are engineered to capture continuous solar radiation, a feat impossible for ground-based solar farms that are rendered inoperative by nighttime. The collected energy is then converted into a low-intensity, near-infrared light beam and transmitted to terrestrial solar facilities.
