BODIES DISCOVERED, GROUPS DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY
Thenkhogin Baite and Thangboimang Lunkim, identified as two Kuki men, were discovered deceased in the jungle near Thawai village, in Kamjong district. Their bodies were found following an alleged confrontation between armed groups associated with the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities in the Mapithel hill range, also referred to as Thawai Kuki Hill, on Thursday.

The incident has ignited a flurry of demands from various Kuki organizations. The Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, has announced a total shutdown along the Imphal-Ukhrul Road until their demands are met. These demands include the identification and arrest of the perpetrators, with an ultimatum for action within 48 hours issued by the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), Sadar Hills Kangpokpi. Furthermore, there are calls for the case to be transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a "fair and impartial investigation," with a specific deadline of 48 hours given by the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR).

REPRISAL AND RETALIATION
Reports suggest the killings may be linked to a retaliatory action. Kuki groups had reportedly held 21 Tangkhul Naga individuals, including women and children, captive in response to alleged attacks on Kuki villages. These alleged attacks were purportedly carried out as part of what Naga organizations described as an 'anti-poppy cultivation drive'. The detained individuals were reportedly released after negotiations involving local civil organizations and state authorities.
SECURITY CONCERNS AND RELOCATION DEMANDS
Concerns over the safety of Kuki villagers in Ukhrul district have been voiced, leading to a demand for the relocation of all Kuki villages in Ukhrul to Kangpokpi district. This demand stems from a feeling of being "deeply threatened" despite past peaceful coexistence with the Tangkhul Christian community. The Kuki-Zo Council has also appealed to the Government of India for decisive action and a "political settlement" to ensure "justice, security, and lasting peace."

BACKGROUND
The ethnic unrest in Manipur has seen prolonged periods of tension between various communities. The Kuki and Naga communities, among others, have experienced historical conflicts and sensitivities. The recent discovery of the bodies follows an alleged exchange of gunfire between armed individuals from the Tangkhul and Kuki communities, described as using "sophisticated weapons." The state government has acknowledged the situation, with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand informing the Manipur Legislative Assembly that the case would be handed over to the NIA. The police have registered three FIRs for further investigation into the matter. The bodies of the deceased were reportedly taken to Imphal for post-mortem examination.
