Malkajgiri, Hyderabad – May 6, 2026 – In a direct confrontation with the perceived realities of women’s safety, Malkajgiri Police Commissioner B. Sumathi conducted an unannounced, solo operation on the city's streets past midnight. Over a three-hour span, between 12:30 AM and 3:30 AM, she stood alone at a bus stop in the Dilsukhnagar area, where she was approached by approximately 40 men. Many of these individuals, according to reports, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or cannabis.
The operation, described as a "bold and unusual field exercise," aimed to assess the "ground reality" of women's safety without the immediate presence of uniformed officers. During the sting, men reportedly made unsolicited advances, posed offensive questions, and engaged in persistent attempts at conversation. Following the operation, police personnel intervened and detained around 40 individuals. These men were reportedly unaware they were interacting with a senior police official.

Sumathi's Personal Experience and Past Precedents
This exercise marks Sumathi's first significant action since assuming the role of Commissioner of Police for Malkajgiri on May 1st. Notably, this is not her first encounter with such tactics. Approximately 25 years ago, early in her career as a Deputy Superintendent of Police near the Kazipet railway station, she undertook a similar operation to gauge women’s safety first-hand. In that instance, instead of pressing charges, she opted for counseling and emphasized the importance of respecting women.
The recent operation saw police teams monitoring the situation from a distance, ready to intervene. Following the detentions, the 40 men were subjected to counseling. The police have indicated that further action will be taken in accordance with the law, though specific details regarding legal classifications and the identities of those detained are pending. The individuals approached included young men, with some identified as students and private employees.
