KOCHI, May 19, 2026 – A significant operation by the Kochi City Police has exposed what appears to be a sprawling human trafficking network, exploiting young women with false promises of modelling and beauty industry careers. The syndicate, allegedly luring victims to Dubai, is now under intense scrutiny, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to delve into its operations. The core of the racket involved deceptive job offers, leading to exploitation and blackmail in foreign territories.
Investigators have so far arrested three individuals: Manjima (24), Aleena Abraham, and Toicy, who is identified as the first accused. The modus operandi, as pieced together by authorities, centers on offering lucrative modelling and beauty industry prospects. Once in foreign countries, primarily Dubai, the women allegedly faced sexual exploitation. Authorities report that intimate videos were recorded, subsequently used for blackmail. The victims' passports and mobile phones were reportedly confiscated to prevent escape or seeking external help.

The unraveling of this syndicate began when a woman, who was promised modelling opportunities, approached the Maradu police with a complaint detailing her ordeal. Her harrowing account spurred a wider investigation, leading to another victim coming forward with similar allegations. This second complaint solidified the police's suspicion of a larger, organized operation with potential international connections. The SIT, headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ashwathy Jiji, is now examining the alleged criminal connections of one of the accused, Aleena Abraham, within Kochi.
The scope of the investigation is expanding, with police probing deeper into the syndicate's potential involvement and intimidation tactics. The case has been registered under stringent provisions, including human trafficking, cheating, wrongful confinement, and causing physical hurt. The City Police Commissioner, Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, is directly overseeing the progress of the investigation, emphasizing the seriousness with which the authorities are treating these allegations.

Background Context: A Recurring Shadow
This incident surfaces amidst a history of human trafficking concerns in the region. While this specific operation targets exploitation under the guise of the modelling industry, past reports indicate broader trafficking networks operating in Kerala, involving various forms of exploitation. Law enforcement agencies, including dedicated Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs) established in every district of Kerala, have been actively working to dismantle such networks and rescue victims. These efforts often involve collaborative national and international actions, recognizing that human trafficking transcends geographical borders. Specialized courts also exist within the state to expedite trials related to trafficking cases, aiming to provide swifter justice for victims. Past incidents have also seen arrests in connection with organ trafficking rings and allegations involving adoption processes.
