NEW DELHI – After a period of considerable uncertainty lasting ten days, the Congress party has formally declared V.D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala. The decision follows consultations involving senior party figures and comes after the United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a decisive mandate in the recent Assembly elections, winning 102 out of 140 seats. Satheesan, who previously served as the Leader of the Opposition, was elected as the legislative party leader.
The announcement concludes a drawn-out process that saw internal deliberations focused on a shortlist of prominent leaders, including Satheesan, K.C. Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala. This extended period of selection reportedly caused some consternation within the UDF coalition. Celebrations have reportedly broken out across Kerala following the official declaration.
Satheesan's political career includes a consecutive six-term tenure as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Paravur constituency. His selection positions him to lead the new government, succeeding the Pinarayi Vijayan-led administration.

Leadership Contenders and Party Structure
The internal discussions leading to Satheesan's nomination had largely centered on three key figures within the Congress party. K.C. Venugopal, an AICC general secretary, was a prominent contender. Ramesh Chennithala, a veteran leader, also featured in the leadership discussions.
The party's central leadership, including input from figures like Rahul Gandhi, engaged in consultations to finalize the choice for Kerala's top administrative post. K.C. Venugopal has publicly acknowledged and accepted the party's decision regarding Satheesan's appointment.
Election Outcome and Coalition Dynamics
The UDF's electoral success was bolstered by a significant contribution from its ally, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which secured 22 seats. This coalition performance led to the ousting of the previous government, despite former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan retaining his own constituency.
The Congress's victory secured 63 seats, forming the core of the UDF's majority. The outcome marked a significant shift in the state's political landscape.
