Patricia Silverton, mother of former BBC News presenter Kate Silverton, has died at the age of 83. She passed away earlier this month after a period of illness, having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last summer.
The news of Patricia's passing was shared by Kate Silverton, who described her mother's death as peaceful and dignified. Silverton revealed that her mother had initially opted against treatment but later sought to participate in a clinical trial. The former journalist, who has since retrained as a child therapist, spoke about her relationship with her mother, noting that they had worked to heal a previously "difficult" bond.
A Shift in Focus: From News Desk to Children's Well-being
Silverton, a recognisable figure from her extensive career in broadcast journalism, spent over two decades with the BBC, presenting programmes including 'BBC News at Six', 'News at Ten', and 'Panorama'. Her journalistic work also took her to international locales, including extensive reporting from Africa. She left the BBC after 24 years, a move she linked in part to concerns about the handling of pandemic policies concerning children.

Since departing from her role as a national news presenter, Silverton has pursued a path focused on child psychology and mental health. She holds a degree in Psychology and has worked for over ten years in the field, culminating in retraining as a children's counsellor with the charity 'Place2Be'. She has publicly advocated for children's emotional well-being, particularly during periods of disruption like the COVID-19 lockdowns, warning of potential long-term mental health consequences. Her philanthropic efforts have also supported various children's charities, including the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families and the NSPCC.
Silverton has also engaged in other media projects, including participation in 'Strictly Come Dancing' and presenting documentaries. She is married to Mike Heron, and they have two children. Her most recent professional endeavours include authoring parenting advice books.
