Josh Mauro, a former defensive lineman who spent eight seasons in the National Football League, died last month from an accidental overdose involving fentanyl, cocaine, and ethanol. This finding comes from the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner, which officially classified the manner of death as an accident. Mauro was 35 years old at the time of his passing.
The official cause of death was "acute combined fentanyl, cocaine, and ethanol intoxication."
Mauro’s sudden death, initially announced by his family last month, has prompted reactions from across the football community, with former teammates and teams, including the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, and Oakland Raiders, offering their condolences. He played in 80 NFL games during his career, starting 40, and recorded five sacks.
Mauro played college football at Stanford before going undrafted in 2014. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals for his rookie season and went on to play four seasons with the team. He also had one-season stints with the New York Giants and the Oakland Raiders. His NFL career concluded with a return to Phoenix, appearing in eight games with three starts across the 2020 and 2021 campaigns.
