Milan-Cortina Paralympics will proceed without Iran's representation, as its sole registered athlete, Aboulfazl Khatibi, has been prevented from competing due to safety concerns stemming from the intensifying conflict in the Middle East. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced on Friday that Khatibi cannot travel to Italy safely, a decision made just hours before the Games' opening ceremony in Verona.
The IPC cited the "risk to human life is too high" as the primary reason for Iran's withdrawal. This development has led to the removal of Iran's flag from the parade of nations, a symbolic consequence of the geopolitical climate. Khatibi, a two-time Paralympian who was slated to participate in two Para cross-country skiing events, will miss the Games after years of dedicated training.
Travel Restrictions Escalate as Conflict Intensifies
The IPC stated that efforts were made "behind the scenes" to secure safe passage for the Iranian delegation, engaging in discussions with the Iranian National Paralympic Committee. However, these attempts were ultimately unsuccessful. IPC President Andrew Parsons noted the difficulty in these dialogues, mentioning that communication systems were reportedly disrupted across much of Iran.

The situation is compounded by recent escalations in the region, including strikes launched by Iran across the Middle East, impacting areas like Israel and Lebanon. Reports also indicate interception of Iranian attacks by Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Bahrain. The timing of these events, with the Games commencing less than a week after a reported military attack against Iran by the United States and Israel, underscores the volatile circumstances.
Heartbreak for the Athlete Amidst Global Tensions
The withdrawal is described as "heart-breaking" for Khatibi, who is 23 years old and has previously competed in the Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022 Paralympics. His scheduled events included the men's sprint classic standing and the men's 10km interval start classic standing. The IPC expressed its sympathies for the athlete, acknowledging that the circumstances are "outside of his control."
