Ivan Miller, 22, arrested in Colorado, admitted to a series of homicides targeting women in Utah, claiming he needed money and a vehicle to return to his home state of Iowa. Miller's alleged confession details shooting and stabbing three women, stealing their vehicles and credit cards in a spree that spanned across Utah and into Colorado.
Authorities identified the victims as Margaret Oldroyd, 86, Linda Dewey, 65, and her niece Natalie Graves, 34. The alleged attacks occurred near Capitol Reef National Park and a trailhead. Miller reportedly confessed to shooting Oldroyd at her home after hiding in a shed on her property. He then proceeded to a park where he encountered Dewey and Graves, stealing their Subaru after shooting them.

Miller stated that he had arrived in Utah after an incident where he struck an elk with his truck, rendering it inoperable. He subsequently sold the damaged vehicle to a towing company and reportedly stayed in a hotel before his alleged crimes.

The Confession and Arrest
Miller allegedly told investigators that his actions, including the killings, "had to be done." He admitted to using a .45-caliber handgun and a large knife during the commission of the crimes. Following the alleged homicides, Miller reportedly drove one of the victim's vehicles and was apprehended in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, while driving a stolen car. He was initially detained on a weapons charge before facing homicide charges.

Legal Ramifications and Defense
Miller faces three counts of aggravated murder. His attorney, a public defender from Colorado, has indicated Miller would resist efforts to be extradited to Utah. The suspect has a history of pre-trial release violations in Iowa, adding another layer to the unfolding legal proceedings.

Background of the Incident
The series of events began with Miller being stranded in Utah. He reportedly sold his truck after hitting an elk, leaving him without transportation. This financial and logistical predicament, according to his statements, fueled his decision to commit the violent acts. The victims were reportedly chosen at random.
