London, UK – April 30, 2026 – Police have formally declared a stabbing incident in Golders Green, north London, a terrorist act. Two Jewish men were injured in the attack, which occurred on Wednesday. A 45-year-old man, a British national born in Somalia, has been arrested. Counterterrorism officers are leading the investigation, exploring whether the attack was specifically targeting the Jewish community.
The suspect had previously been referred to the government’s counter-extremism programme, Prevent. This detail emerged as officials scrambled to address the escalating situation. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the suspect’s prior connection to the program, which aims to identify individuals at risk of radicalization.
CCTV footage shows the suspect, identified by some reports as jogging along Highfield Avenue at approximately 11:15 BST, subsequently chasing and attacking a man on Golders Green Road. The suspect was taken to hospital following his arrest but later discharged and brought to a police station, where he remains in custody.

The incident has prompted a swift political response. The Prime Minister convened a COBRA meeting to discuss the aftermath, with local MP and Justice Minister Sarah Sackman highlighting the gravity of the situation. Opposition leader Keir Starmer also announced plans to meet with criminal justice agencies.
Politicians from various parties have voiced concerns and demanded action. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called for the expulsion of the Iranian ambassador and the proscription of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey urged "immediate and visible action" to protect British Jews, framing the situation as a "national emergency."
This stabbing follows a series of recent attacks on Jewish sites in the capital. These include an attempted firebombing of Finchley Reform Synagogue on April 15 and an arson attack on four Hatzola ambulances on March 23. An attempted arson attack in the same Golders Green area on Monday, April 28, had already heightened community anxieties. UK's Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis had previously described a "sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community" that was "gathering momentum." Counterterrorism police are investigating potential links between the Golders Green stabbing and these prior incidents.
