Five school-aged individuals perished in two distinct water-related incidents across Odisha's Koraput and Mayurbhanj districts on Saturday. The events, separated by geography and age group, have cast a shadow over the communities involved.

Koraput Reservoir Tragedy
In the Koraput district, three Class 10 students met their end in the backwaters of the Kolab reservoir. Reports indicate the students had recently completed their board examinations and were apparently waiting for their parents when the incident occurred. Efforts to rescue them by locals were made, but they were later declared deceased at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital. The identities of these three students are given as Lingaraj Khil (16), Swastik (15), and Om Prakash (16).

Mayurbhanj Pond Incident
Simultaneously, in the Mayurbhanj district, two young girls, identified as Class 2 students, drowned in a pond near their village, Nachhipur, within the Kaptipada police station limits. The girls were reportedly bathing in the pond after school hours when the tragedy struck.

Community Impact and Unconfirmed Details
The deaths have understandably led to significant grief within the affected villages. One account mentions that the father of one of the girls in Mayurbhanj had previously cautioned her about going to the pond. Another detail from a source suggests the Koraput students may have been playing in the water. Authorities are stated to be investigating both incidents. Some sources point to families blaming schools for a lack of supervision, though no official cause has been confirmed.

Contextualizing the Incidents
These separate drownings underscore the inherent dangers associated with bodies of water, particularly for young people. The juxtaposition of two distinct age groups—young children and adolescents celebrating the end of their secondary education—highlights different vulnerabilities and circumstances surrounding these tragic events. The Kolab reservoir and the village pond in Nachhipur have become sites of profound sorrow, leaving behind grieving families and communities.
