Nashik, May 10, 2026 — Rupali Chakankar, former president of the NCP's women's wing and ex-chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women's Commission, was subjected to a six-hour interrogation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) today. The questioning focused on her purported links to Ashok Kharat, a self-styled spiritual leader currently arrested for a string of alleged sexual exploitations, financial fraud, and blackmail. The SIT is reportedly examining Chakankar's financial dealings and bank accounts, where Kharat was listed as a nominee, and investigating the influence of his alleged 'black magic' practices.
Kharat, arrested on March 18, faces multiple charges including repeated rape, sexual assault, land grabbing, and financial impropriety. The SIT, formed to investigate these cases across Nashik and Ahilyanagar districts, is delving into allegations that Kharat operated proxy bank accounts under various individuals' names. Chakankar’s resignation from her posts came amid surfacing questions about her association with Kharat. She has stated her full cooperation with the ongoing investigation, acknowledging her responsibility to assist the authorities.

Political Ramifications Emerge
The SIT’s focus on Chakankar’s alleged connections to Kharat has intensified political scrutiny. While Nana Patole, a senior Congress leader, has pointed fingers at several state ministers for supposed ties to Kharat, demanding their removal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for concrete evidence, asserting assurances of Kharat's safety in custody. The unfolding controversy has sparked broader debates regarding institutional accountability within political circles. The coming weeks are expected to be critical for the direction of this investigation.
