Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has announced that Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf will not face criminal charges for an incident involving a Detroit Lions fan, Ryan Kennedy, in December. The decision, made after an extensive review of evidence, means legal proceedings will not continue regarding the confrontation that occurred at Ford Field.
The prosecutor's office determined that insufficient evidence existed to support criminal charges against Metcalf, effectively denying a prior warrant request. This development, announced on May 1st, concludes the criminal aspect of the situation.
Legal Ramifications and Civil Pursuits
While criminal charges are off the table, the fan, Ryan Kennedy, is reportedly pursuing a separate civil lawsuit against Metcalf. Metcalf's attorney, Mitch Schuster, stated his firm applauds the prosecutor's decision, citing a "thorough investigation." However, Schuster also indicated they "vow to continue his civil legal fight on behalf of his client," suggesting Metcalf has filed a counterclaim.

Reports indicate Kennedy's counterclaim alleges "hate-fueled conduct" by the fan, a claim Kennedy has reportedly denied. A civil case status conference is scheduled for May 5th.
The Incident
The altercation occurred in December during a game between the Steelers and the Lions. Metcalf approached the stands near the Steelers' bench, where Kennedy, holding a Metcalf jersey, was present. A brief interaction ensued, resulting in Metcalf grabbing Kennedy's shirt and pushing him back. The event was captured on national television.
Kennedy did not report any injuries at the game and did not seek medical attention.
League Action and Contractual Standing
Metcalf was previously suspended by the NFL for Weeks 17 and 18 of the season following the incident. He appealed this suspension to Commissioner Roger Goodell, but the appeal was denied. He was eligible to return for the Steelers' playoff game against the Houston Texans.
