Internal Review Follows Publication of Sedona Images
Dianna Russini, an NFL reporter for The Athletic, has resigned. The departure comes less than a week after photographs surfaced showing her with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel at a resort in Sedona, Arizona. The publication of these images triggered an internal investigation by The Athletic, which is owned by The New York Times.
The photos, published by The New York Post, depicted Vrabel and Russini, both married individuals, in what was described as holding hands and dancing at the resort. These encounters reportedly occurred prior to the NFL owners meetings held in Phoenix starting March 29. Both Vrabel and Russini released statements attempting to downplay the situation. Vrabel characterized the interaction as "innocent" and found suggestions otherwise "laughable," while Russini stated they were part of a larger group and that commentators were engaging in "self-feeding speculation."

Russini, in her resignation letter, indicated that The Athletic had initially offered support. However, she chose to step down not as an admission of guilt, but to prevent the situation from defining her or her career. Her resignation letter also suggested she would not lend "further oxygen" to the narrative constructed around the episode.
Scrutiny Over Journalism Ethics
The incident has prompted discussion regarding journalism ethics. Some experts have pointed to the "appearance of impropriety" in the photos, even as individuals involved downplayed the context. Russini's departure has not halted the ongoing internal review at The Athletic, with executive editor Steven Ginsberg acknowledging that "new questions were raised."
Vrabel, meanwhile, continues his role with the Patriots, with team executive Eliot Wolf affirming his involvement in daily operations. Russini, who joined The Athletic in 2023, had a contract set to expire on June 30. Her prior career included stints at NBC New York and ESPN.
