Former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore has been sentenced to 18 months of probation, avoiding jail time following an incident at the home of a former staffer with whom he had an extramarital affair. The sentence, handed down on Tuesday, also includes suspended jail terms of 180 and 30 days, contingent on his compliance with probation terms. He pleaded no contest in March to misdemeanor charges of trespassing and malicious use of a telecommunications device. Felony charges of home invasion, stalking, and breaking and entering were dropped as part of a plea agreement.
Moore was ordered to have no contact with the former staffer, identified as Shiver. The judge, Cedric Simpson, also instructed Moore to pay over $1,000 in court costs and probation fees. Additionally, Moore must abstain from alcohol and marijuana use during his probation period.

Details of the Incident and Sentencing
The confrontation occurred on December 10 after Moore's dismissal from the University of Michigan. He went to Shiver's apartment, reportedly blaming her for the loss of his position. During the incident, Moore acknowledged bringing scissors and grabbing butter knives, though he denied pointing them at Shiver. He did not deny a past relationship with the staffer to police, according to body camera footage, but maintained he did not break into the apartment or threaten her, citing that Shiver had provided him with her door code.
Judge Simpson offered a stern rebuke during the sentencing, stating, "Frankly, Mr. Moore, you had no right to do what you did…you had no right to spread your pain to her." The judge also acknowledged the victim's stance played a significant role in the leniency of the sentence. Moore, 40, briefly addressed the court, thanking his wife, faith, lawyer, and Jesus. His wife, Kelli Moore, was present at the courthouse, and the couple left holding hands. Police conduct during Moore's initial arrest was also commented on by the judge.

Background
Moore took over the Michigan program for two seasons after Jim Harbaugh's departure for the NFL. His tenure concluded after the scandal led to his firing in December, just over four months prior to his sentencing. The team achieved a 9-3 record under his coaching during the past season before his dismissal.
