Teenager Dead Following Durham Crash
A collision in northwest Durham on Saturday night has resulted in the death of a 15-year-old bicyclist. Joseph Savarino, grandson of retired Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, faces a misdemeanor charge of driving while impaired in connection with the incident.
The accident occurred around 9 p.m. ET on April 18, at the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane, when Savarino's vehicle struck the teenager who was riding a bicycle. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Savarino, who was 20 at the time of his arrest, reportedly told authorities he had been drinking earlier that evening.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Savarino's next court appearance is scheduled for May 20. His attorney, Butch Williams, has not yet responded to requests for comment. Savarino, who previously played as a walk-on for the Duke men's basketball team, has been released on bail. He had previously been stopped for a stop sign violation in November and arrested on DWI charges.
