Chandran Pillai has stepped down from his role as Chairperson of the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). His departure coincides with a broader change in leadership at the state level.
In his final remarks, Pillai articulated a vision for the GCDA, emphasizing a pivot away from traditional land acquisition towards a model of development centered on land pooling and public participation. He highlighted the 'Bodhi' urban development conclave as a pivotal event that provided a new direction for the authority. The former chairperson stressed that future GCDA efforts must prioritize land pooling mechanisms to foster development through community involvement.
Pillai, a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has a political background that includes serving as a Member of Parliament for Kerala in the Rajya Sabha. He currently holds the position of national secretary for the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). His tenure as GCDA Chairperson began on February 8, 2022.

Recent events have cast a shadow over GCDA operations during Pillai's leadership. In January 2025, reports emerged questioning the authority's decision-making processes following an incident at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium where MLA Uma Thomas fell from a stage. The circumstances surrounding the approval of a dance event at the stadium, despite initial reservations from the GCDA's estate wing, led to scrutiny over alleged political interference. Despite concerns, Pillai reportedly approved the event, setting a rental fee of Rs 9 lakh and a security deposit of Rs 5 lakh for the organizers.
Pillai's stated objectives upon taking charge in February 2022 included transforming Kochi into a globally competitive city, acknowledging its vulnerability to climate change. He advocated for development that transcended political lines, incorporating all sections of society and drawing inspiration from international best practices.
