A federal judge has whittled down Blake Lively's extensive legal entanglement with Justin Baldoni, tossing out the lion's share of her accusations. Judge Lewis Liman axed 10 out of 13 claims, including those centered on sexual harassment and defamation, leaving a significantly pared-down case to proceed.

The core of Lively's remaining allegations now pivot to claims of retaliation. Specifically, three claims will move forward: breach of contract and retaliation against It Ends With Us Movie LLC, retaliation against Baldoni's production company Wayfarer Studios, and aiding and abetting retaliation against The Agency Group PR LLC. The latter is accused of orchestrating an online campaign aimed at tarnishing Lively's reputation.

Jurisdiction Scrutinized, Harassment Claims Shelved
A key factor in the dismissal of sexual harassment allegations was a matter of jurisdiction. Judge Liman determined that while Lively pursued her case under California law, the alleged misconduct did not demonstrably occur within that state's borders. Furthermore, Liman suggested that some of Baldoni's purported conduct, in the context of discussing sexual scenes for a film dealing with mature themes, did not inherently create a "sexually objectionable environment" or a hostile atmosphere. This reasoning directly impacts the dismissal of harassment claims against Baldoni and other individual defendants.

Legal Teams Offer Divergent Views
"This case has always been and will remain focused on the devastating retaliation and the extraordinary steps the defendants took to destroy Blake Lively’s reputation because she stood up for safety on the set and that is the case that is going to trial."- Sigrid McCawley, Lively's legal team
Lively's legal representatives framed the remaining claims as the central focus from the outset, expressing anticipation for a trial to expose what they describe as a "vicious form of online retaliation."

Conversely, Baldoni's legal team heralded the decision as a significant win.
"We're very pleased the Court dismissed all sexual harassment claims and every claim brought against the individual defendants: Justin Baldoni, Jamey Heath, Steve Sarowitz, Melissa Nathan, and Jennifer Abel."- Alexandra Shapiro and Jonathan Bach, Baldoni's legal team
They expressed gratitude for the court's "careful review" and emphasized the dismissal of harassment claims and those against individuals, including Baldoni himself. Notably, Baldoni is no longer a personal defendant in the remaining claims.
Broader Context of Legal Maneuvers
The legal battle, which has stretched over a year, has involved not only Lively's suit but also counter-actions. Baldoni initiated defamation cases against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and their publicist, alleging attempts to ruin his career. The court proceedings have also brought to light private communications, including text messages between Lively and other prominent figures such as Taylor Swift. A settlement conference was held as a last-ditch effort to resolve the dispute prior to the scheduled trial, which was slated to begin in New York on May 18th.
