A new Blackhearts & Sparrows location in Fitzroy blurs the lines between a traditional wine store and a place to linger for a drink, a move that signals a shift in how the popular retailer approaches customer engagement. The expanded offering, situated in the former Slowbeer space on Smith Street, allows patrons to purchase wine off the shelf or settle in for a glass or two before continuing their day. This latest venture by siblings Paul and Jessica Ghaie marks their 13th store in Victoria, with additional locations in Hobart and Canberra.
The Fitzroy establishment is not designed as a classic Melbourne wine bar, but rather a 'wine store with the opportunity to hang out and have a quick glass or two'. Hours of operation are structured to accommodate a more casual drop-in experience: Tuesday to Thursday from midday to 8 PM, Friday and Saturday from midday to 9 PM, and Sunday from midday to 6 PM.

A Growing Network
Blackhearts & Sparrows, established by the Ghaie siblings, has steadily grown its footprint across Australia. The Fitzroy store is located approximately a 12-minute walk from their existing 10-year-old Smith Street outlet. This expansion strategy also includes a venture into private event spaces, with the conversion of a historic Smith Street address into a venue for parties and gatherings.
Evolving Retail Models
The company's approach to wine retail appears to be adapting beyond simple stockists. Blackhearts & Sparrows has also introduced a 'wine subscription service', offering members curated selections based on budget and taste. This service includes personalized recommendations, indicating a deeper engagement with customer preferences and a move towards more bespoke retail experiences. Their website lists multiple locations, including Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, High Street in Northcote, Chapel Street in Windsor, and others across Victoria, as well as in Wollongong and Belmont.
