NEW DELHI – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has leveled accusations against the Congress, demanding accountability for an alleged "assault" on a journalist in Jharkhand and calling for action against a state minister. The opposition party claims this incident highlights a pattern of targeting media personnel in states where Congress holds influence.
The BJP's national spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawalla, has directly challenged Congress leadership, including Rahul Gandhi and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, to address the situation involving minister Irfan Ansari. Poonawalla characterized Ansari as a "serial offender" and asserted that the Congress exhibits an "Emergency mindset," drawing parallels to historical instances of alleged suppression of free speech under previous Congress administrations, citing actions during the Emergency period and legislation enacted during Rajiv Gandhi's tenure.
The BJP's stance implies that the Jharkhand government, in which Congress is a partner, is complicit in or enabling such actions against journalists. The party suggests a deliberate strategy by Congress-governed states to intimidate or silence media through legal and other means.

"This is the mindset they show. This is the true face of the Congress party."— Shehzad Poonawalla, BJP National Spokesperson
The controversy surfaces amidst broader political discussions on freedom of speech and the role of the judiciary in addressing hate speech, with the Supreme Court recently commenting on the judiciary's inability to legislate new offenses.
This incident is framed by the BJP as indicative of the Congress party's broader approach to democratic principles and press freedom, contrasting it with the party's public pronouncements on democracy and free expression.
