PATNA - The Bihar government is gearing up for a significant cabinet expansion on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Amidst widespread political chatter, the potential induction of Nishant Kumar, son of former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, into the council of ministers has emerged as a central point of discussion.
The expansion is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, with preparations for a swearing-in ceremony reportedly underway at Patna's Gandhi Maidan. Sources indicate that the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] is pushing for approximately 16 berths in the expanded cabinet, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expected to secure a similar number, potentially 12 to 13 new ministers. Smaller allies like the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) [LJP (RV)], Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) [HAM(S)], and Rashtriya Lok Samata Party [RLM] are also anticipated to receive representation, with the LJP (RV) possibly getting two and HAM(S) and RLM one each.

Nishant Kumar's Potential Ascent
Reports suggest that Nishant Kumar, who recently joined the JD(U) and embarked on a "Bihar yatra" to connect with the populace, may finally consent to a ministerial role. This potential move comes after initial reluctance, with JD(U) leaders reportedly persuading him that a government position would better enable him to address party and organizational needs. The rationale behind his potential inclusion is described as a means to ensure continued synergy between the government and the party structure.
While many within the JD(U) express a desire for Nishant Kumar to assume a ministerial position, the ultimate decision is said to rest with him. Some party figures have acknowledged that discussions regarding his potential role have taken place, with leaders like JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary meeting with Nitish Kumar to finalize party nominees. However, dissenting voices, such as JD(U) MLC Devesh Chandra Thakur, have indicated they have not heard specific confirmation of Nishant Kumar's inclusion.

Broader Cabinet Dynamics
The expansion aims to achieve a degree of social balance within the new ministerial team, with both the BJP and JD(U) reportedly agreeing on a formula that allocates around 16 ministers to each party. The list of probable candidates from the BJP includes names such as Vijay Kumar Sinha, Mangal Pandey, Sanjay Singh Tiger, Shreyasi Singh, Sanjeev Chourasia, Nitish Mishra, and Krishna Kumar Mantu. It is also suggested that the BJP might retain most of its existing ministers from the previous Nitish cabinet.
This cabinet expansion follows Nitish Kumar's recent transition to the Rajya Sabha. Earlier speculations had even suggested Nishant Kumar could be elevated to the position of Deputy Chief Minister after his father's resignation and subsequent move to the upper house of Parliament. Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary has previously expressed his willingness to welcome Nishant Kumar into the cabinet.
