Thousands of eateries across Bengaluru are halting operations as of March 10, 2026. The Bangalore Hotels Association issued a notice on Monday stating that cooking will stop because commercial LPG cylinders are no longer being delivered.

"Without gas, it will not be possible to prepare food… the government's move has made it inevitable for most to shut down," stated P C Rao, Honorary President of the association.
The stoppage occurred without warning, despite earlier corporate promises from oil firms that supply would remain steady for at least 70 days. This sudden evaporation of fuel forces a citywide shutdown of kitchens that feed workers, students, and hospital patients.

The Broken Promise of 70 Days
The hotel industry claims they were led to believe a buffer existed. Oil companies had signaled that the West Asia conflict would not choke the local supply immediately. That math proved wrong.

Sudden Halt: Deliveries stopped on March 9 with zero lead time.
Priority Shift: The Ministry has ordered refineries to pivot production away from "commercial" use to "domestic" (household) use.
Supply Logic: Propane and butane, the guts of LPG, are getting squeezed by refinery constraints and shifting import routes.
| Sector Affected | Immediate Consequence |
|---|---|
| Daily Wage Workers | Loss of access to low-cost canteen meals |
| Medical Centers | Disruption in food service for patients/staff |
| Banquet Halls | Cancellation of pre-booked events and weddings |
| Students | Closure of essential mess halls and small cafes |
A Fragile Chain of Fire
The disruption is a direct result of the shaky geopolitical landscape in West Asia. While the United States and Russia produce gas, the local logistics in India are failing to bridge the gap created by the current oil supply strain.

The "essential service" status of hotels is being tested. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah acknowledged the mess but separated the physical lack of gas from the rising price of the fuel. For the person owning a small tiffin room, this distinction is useless; if the tank is empty, the stove stays off regardless of the price tag.
Context: Why the Gas Stopped
The LPG shortage isn't just a local glitch. LPG is a byproduct of crude oil refining. When global crude flows stutter due to war, the byproduct is the first to get rationed.
"The rising LPG prices is a separate issue," says the Chief Minister, though for the industry, the lack of physical cylinders is the terminal problem.
Currently, the government is scrambling to protect households by sacrificing the commercial sector's needs. This leaves the city's hospitality backbone—an industry that usually never sleeps—staring at cold burners and locked doors starting Tuesday morning.
