ECONOMIC ARTISANRY AND POLITICAL SYMBOLISM UNFOLD
Belagavi is currently a stage for dual narratives: one of economic endeavor marked by the Charkha Mela showcasing local crafts, and another of political theater with the Congress party convening its highest decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee (CWC).

The Charkha Mela, an exhibition and sale of natural colored pure cotton handlooms and handicrafts, commenced today and is scheduled to run for three days. Organized by the Heggodu Honnesara-based Charkha Women’s Multi-purpose Industrial Cooperative Society, the event features a diverse array of products. Visitors can expect to find ready-made garments, fabrics, natural colored bedspreads, Jamdani saris, kurtas, shirts, and home decor items. The fair also includes specialized offerings such as saris from North Karnataka, banana fiber products, natural cosmetics, plant seeds, organic food items, artistic saris from Dharwad, cane products, and Lambani embroidered saris. The Charkha Mela is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Concurrently, Belagavi is hosting an extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, termed a 'Nav Satyagraha Baithak'. This gathering is framed by the Congress as a 'historic' event, intended to resonate with the party's past and signal a potential resurgence. The timing is significant as it marks the centennial of Mahatma Gandhi assuming the presidency of the Indian National Congress in Belgaum (now Belagavi) on December 26th, 1924. The party intends to 'rededicate itself to protecting Gandhiji's legacy'. A rally, under the banner of 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan', is planned for tomorrow.

TRAGEDY'S ECHOES IN THE CITY'S NAME
The city's recent past is shadowed by a tragic incident. A mother and daughter from Belagavi, Jyoti and Megha Hattarawath, were among at least 10 individuals killed in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. The incident, which occurred recently, highlights the vulnerability inherent in large gatherings, regardless of their nature.

CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND
The confluence of economic activity and political maneuverings in Belagavi is notable. The Charkha Mela represents a localized effort focused on artisanal production and rural industry. In contrast, the Congress CWC meeting is a national-level political event, leveraging the historical significance of Belagavi to underscore themes of legacy and renewed purpose within the party. The inclusion of 'Jai Bhim' alongside 'Jai Bapu' in the rally's slogan suggests an attempt to forge connections with broader social and political movements. The presence of state and regional officials at the Charkha Mela, alongside the high-profile political gathering, suggests a complex interplay of local commerce and national politics shaping the city's current discourse.
