ASSAM - Early vote counting for the 126-seat Assam Assembly has painted a stark picture, with the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) appearing poised for a decisive win. Trends emerging from the Election Commission of India indicate the alliance is leading in upwards of 70 seats, with some reports placing their lead at 98 constituencies. This performance suggests a strong mandate, potentially securing a third consecutive term for the BJP-led coalition.
The primary contest was framed as a battle between the incumbent NDA, spearheaded by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's BJP, and the Congress-backed 'Asom Sonmilito Morcha' (ASM), led by Gaurav Gogoi. However, early indicators show the opposition alliance struggling to gain significant traction. The Congress was reportedly ahead in only 25 constituencies, a stark contrast to the NDA's projected dominance.
Several key figures are part of this electoral narrative. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is a central figure for the NDA. On the opposition's side, Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress state president, and Debabrata Saikia, the opposition leader, are prominent. Other notable candidates include Akhil Gogoi of Raijor Dal and Badruddin Ajmal of the AIUDF.
