Air New Zealand has begun rolling out a revamped business class product across its fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The airline has unveiled new seating configurations and cabin formats, marking a significant update to its premium offering. This retrofit initiative includes the introduction of a new "Business Premier Luxe" seat category, alongside the updated Business Premier seats. The refreshed aircraft feature a notable increase in the number of business class seats on some planes, with up to 42 seats now available across the two premium tiers, a rise from the previous maximum of 27.
The new Business Premier Luxe seats are positioned at the front of the cabin, with early reports indicating between four and eight such seats. The standard Business Premier seats are described as lie-flat pods. This change signals a move towards a more enclosed and private seating arrangement compared to the airline's previous designs.

UPGRADES AND FEATURES
The airline's retrofit program encompasses more than just the seating. Passengers can expect new onboard experiences and cabin layouts across four class tiers. The refurbished Dreamliner cabins are designed to offer enhanced privacy, with features like sliding partial screens. Passengers traveling in Business Premier will also benefit from an expedited airport experience, including check-in and bag drop conducted in a private suite.
While the seating is new, the airport lounges remain a consistent feature, offering amenities such as showers, hot food, and a full bar. For those traveling with a companion, the center seats in the new configuration are noted as facilitating conversation.
ROLLOUT AND ROUTES
The first retrofitted 787-9 Dreamliner was unveiled in Auckland and began flying on May 19, 2025, with a return route from Auckland to Brisbane. Air New Zealand has indicated that this new product will not be installed on their Boeing 777 aircraft. While specific U.S. routes utilizing the refurbished aircraft have not been extensively detailed, the airline employs the 787-9 on several North American services. Seats for these updated cabins went on sale on May 7, 2025.
