Nintendo has officially slated "Yoshi and the Mysterious Book" for a May 21 release on the Nintendo Switch 2 console. The announcement coincided with 'Mario Day', a date typically observed for the company's iconic plumber, suggesting a broader narrative is being woven around its characters. The game, a new entry in the long-running Yoshi platformer series, presents a "storybook world" where Yoshi aids a talking book named Mr. E.
The core premise involves exploring this book's pages, discovering and documenting various creatures. Players will be able to name these creatures, either manually or by letting Mr. E choose. The gameplay loop seems to involve making discoveries, collecting in-game items like 'Stars', and unlocking more pages to traverse.

Further details emerged through a new gameplay trailer. This trailer also hinted at the presence of Bowser Jr. within the game's habitats, adding a familiar antagonist to the unfolding narrative. Creatures encountered can be picked up and carried, some with unique abilities like fostering plant growth to aid progression.

This new Yoshi title joins other prominent first-party releases for the Switch 2, such as "Mario Kart World" and "Donkey Kong Bananza". "Yoshi and the Mysterious Book" is described as a 'Switch 2 exclusive'.
The game was first unveiled last year during a Nintendo Direct event. The narrative begins when a peculiar talking book, identified as Mr. E, unexpectedly falls from the sky onto the island where Yoshi and his friends reside. Mr. E apparently needs Yoshi's assistance to recall information about the creatures residing within his pages. This latest installment is being positioned as a blend of familiar Yoshi gameplay mechanics with a distinct visual style, drawing comparisons to previous titles like "Yoshi's Crafted World" and "Yoshi's Woolly World". The release is also being framed as part of the Switch 2's upcoming first-year anniversary celebrations.
