John Ashby, 32, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and religiously aggravated assault of a Sikh woman in her Walsall home. The attack, which occurred in October 2025, saw Ashby follow the woman to her residence before forcing his way inside. He admitted to rape, robbery, intentional strangulation, and religiously aggravated assault.
The court heard that Ashby subjected the victim to a brutal ordeal, using religiously charged slurs and forcing her to repeat phrases dictated by him. He called her a 'Muslim b*', stating his intention to 'have fun' and 'give her some British c'. This hate-fueled motivation stemmed from Ashby's mistaken belief that the victim was Muslim.
Ashby changed his plea to guilty midway through his trial at Birmingham Crown Court on April 21, 2026. He has been described as having shown no emotion during court proceedings, even as the gravity of his actions and the potential sentence were revealed.

Details of the Attack
The assault took place in the Park Hall area of Walsall. Neighbours reported hearing the woman scream for help on the evening of the attack. Prosecutors detailed that Ashby poured hot water over the victim and forced her to utter religious phrases and repeat his self-proclaimed mantra. He also switched off the lights during the prolonged assault.
Court Proceedings
During a hearing, court proceedings were temporarily disrupted when an individual from the public gallery confronted Ashby, leading to a brief adjournment. The judge, at the sentencing, reportedly praised the victim's bravery, expressing admiration and hope for her and her partner to rebuild their lives. Ashby, who is of no fixed abode, will serve a life sentence for these abhorrent crimes.
