Allegations Surface Amid Renewed Scrutiny of Marriage History
Vice President JD Vance announced Tuesday that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating Representative Ilhan Omar for potential immigration fraud. The claims center on long-standing questions regarding Omar's past marital history and immigration status, specifically allegations that she married a man identified by critics as her brother.
The core of the announcement rests on Vance's assertion that the DOJ is actively examining these allegations.
Representatives for Omar have previously denied similar accusations, describing them as false and politically motivated. Vance, who heads an administration task force on benefit fraud, stated, "Everyone deserves equal justice under the law." He added that "looking at things about Ilhan Omar—who she married and whether she married this person or another—there certainly seems to be something off."
Vance indicated that the administration would "follow the standard legal process" and "take a look at it." He further commented, "if a crime is evident, we will pursue it." Vance has previously publicly stated that he believes Omar "definitely committed immigration fraud."

Background on Scrutiny
The renewed attention revives questions that have followed Omar for years, touching on her immigration status, family finances, and alleged ties to fraud schemes. A significant part of the scrutiny has focused on her marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen who has been identified in various reports as a possible sibling. Reports have also raised questions about whether Omar maintained a religious union with Hirsi, with whom she reportedly continued to have children, despite a legal marriage to Elmi. Vance described the situation as "something fishy" but emphasized he did not want to "prejudge an investigation."
