A van driver has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the death of Aalia Mahomed, a 20-year-old university student, in a collision on The Strand in central London last March. The incident, which occurred near King's College London's campus, resulted in Mahomed being fatally struck by the vehicle. The driver, Christopher Jackson, has admitted to all charges.

Jackson's van first collided with an iron gate, knocking it off its hinges, before mounting a flower bed and briefly becoming airborne. It then impacted the bench where Mahomed was seated. Mahomed, who was in her second year studying physics and philosophy, was pronounced dead at the scene. The court heard that Jackson, who had never driven the van before, stated he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.

The crash has had a profound and irreversible impact on Mahomed's family and friends, described by some as "impossible to overstate." The incident also caused "life-changing injuries" to two other students.

Jackson, 27, also received a five-year driving ban, to be served concurrently with his custodial sentence, with a requirement to pass a compulsory retest.

The collision took place shortly before lunchtime on March 18 of last year. Jackson pleaded guilty to the charges against him in February 2026, leading to his sentencing on March 6, 2026.
