NATIONAL SECURITY POSTURE SHIFTED TO 'SEVERE'
The United Kingdom's national terrorism threat level has been raised to 'severe', signalling that an attack is now considered "highly likely". This recalibration by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) follows a series of incidents, most recently a double stabbing in Golders Green. The elevation means authorities assess that a terrorist act is not just possible but probable.
The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, characterized the Golders Green event as a "vile act of terrorism." The move from 'substantial' (where an attack is considered 'likely') to 'severe' implies an increased imminence. Officials anticipate this will cause concern, particularly within the Jewish community, which has experienced heightened vulnerability and fear due to recent attacks.
BACKGROUND TO THE INCREASED ALERT
The decision to raise the threat level comes after a string of incidents impacting the Jewish community in recent weeks. The Golders Green stabbing, which occurred yesterday, involved two Jewish men being attacked. Police deployed a taser to apprehend the assailant.

The suspect in the Golders Green incident has been identified as Essa Suleiman, a 45-year-old man with a history of 'serious violence and mental health issues'. He reportedly came to Britain from Somalia as a child and had previously been referred to the government's 'Prevent' anti-terror programme. Details surrounding the nature of his Prevent referral remain undisclosed due to the ongoing investigation.
In response to the heightened alert and the specific targeting of the Jewish community, police forces across the country are expected to increase patrols in areas with significant Jewish populations. The Prime Minister and Home Secretary were also present in Golders Green, facing protests, and met with members of the Shomrim, a Jewish community security organisation that reportedly assisted in the suspect's detention.
The national threat level had reportedly remained unchanged for the past four years. This escalation also comes with discussions of enhanced powers for the Home Secretary to proscribe state-backed organisations deemed a threat to national security.
