REQUEST FOR 15-DAY REPRIEVE CITES ELECTION DUTIES AND LOCATION PREFERENCE
Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) and a prominent actor, has formally requested a 15-day extension to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further questioning in the Karur stampede case. The summons, issued for March 10th, cited his involvement in the incident that occurred during a campaign rally on September 27th, which resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals.

Vijay, through his legal representatives, has not only sought a postponement but has also requested that the questioning take place in Chennai or another location within Tamil Nadu, rather than at the CBI headquarters in Delhi. This marks the actor's third summons from the agency concerning the incident. Sources indicate the CBI is considering these requests, with a likelihood of issuing fresh summons bearing new dates and potentially a revised location.

BACKGROUND TO THE INVESTIGATION
The CBI's inquiry into the Karur stampede is examining crucial aspects of the event. Investigations are focusing on:
Crowd Management: Evaluating the strategies employed to control the large gathering.
Event Coordination: Assessing the planning and execution of the rally.
Timeline and Information Flow: Determining when Vijay was informed about the gathering and his movements during the event, including the coordination of his caravan with local authorities.
Organizational Responsibility: Identifying who was responsible for planning and managing the rally.
The CBI assumed control of this investigation in October of the previous year, following directives from the Supreme Court. This agency's probe follows initial statements recorded from Tamil Nadu police officers, which reportedly contradict Vijay and his party's assertions regarding responsibility. Vijay has consistently denied TVK's culpability in the stampede. The actor has previously appeared before the CBI on January 12th and 19th.
The agency also summoned Karur MLA V Senthil Balaji in connection with the probe, though his appearance status remains undecided.
