SoftBank Group has reported substantial profit gains, marking its first annual profit in four years. This turnaround appears heavily influenced by its strategic investments in artificial intelligence and the broader recovery of global equity markets. The company's recent performance also saw a lift from the successful initial public offering of PayPay, its Japanese mobile payment application.
The fiscal year concluding March 2025 has seen SoftBank return to profitability after a four-year downturn, a development attributed to both a rebound in equity valuations and a pointed pivot towards AI-centric infrastructure and innovation.
Key to this recovery has been the company's strategic positioning around AI and semiconductor infrastructure. SoftBank notably pursued the initial public offering of its British chip designer, Arm, which materialized on the NASDAQ in September 2023. This move not only offered a potential long-term revenue stream during the current AI boom but also helped replenish SoftBank's financial reserves and restore some investor confidence.

The company has emphasized a focused strategy on artificial intelligence, with Masayoshi Son, SoftBank's chief, declaring AI as the "core of SoftBank’s evolution." This strategic direction is supported by investments in entities such as U.S. AI company Nvidia, German provider Deutsche Telekom, and British semiconductor manufacturer Arm. Previously, SoftBank had divested a portion of its Nvidia stake for $5.8 billion, a move apparently aimed at funding its ongoing AI investments.
Beyond its technology ventures, SoftBank also benefited from the public listing of PayPay. This popular Japanese mobile payment application, which facilitates quick, cashless transactions via QR codes, provided an additional boost to the company's earnings.
In related news, SoftBank Corp., a distinct entity within the SoftBank Group, has also reported strong financial results. For the fiscal year 2024, it achieved record revenue and increased profits, leading to an upward revision of its mid-term plan targets. A significant contributor to this was the addition of 1 million new smartphone subscribers in FY2024, expanding its base to over 31 million. SoftBank Corp. is also addressing the demand for high-performance memory for GPUs by collaborating with partners to develop core components over the next two years.
