New CEO Brings E-commerce Background Amidst Publishing Shifts
Simon & Schuster has named Greg Greeley, a former Amazon executive, as its new Chief Executive Officer. The appointment, effective immediately, sees Greeley, 62, succeed Jonathan Karp. Karp is slated to lead his own imprint, Simon Six, within the company.
Greeley's tenure at Amazon spanned nearly two decades, including a role as vice president of Amazon Prime. This marks a significant shift, as Greeley's background lies primarily in business and investment, a contrast to Karp's extensive career in editing and publishing.
"Greeley and Karp will work closely with Simon & Schuster’s publishing leaders to ensure continuity with authors, agents, and employees during the transition and to strengthen the company’s long-standing editorial culture."
The publisher's decision signals a potential focus on digital marketplace strategies to navigate an evolving media landscape. Greeley's experience scaling Amazon Prime's membership offerings might inform future reader engagement and digital distribution plans. This move appears to be a strategic pivot towards technology-driven growth, occurring as traditional book sales contend with a broader array of entertainment and digital alternatives.

Greeley is noted as the first CEO of a major trade publisher to come from outside the book industry since Markus Dohle took the helm at Random House in 2008. The search for a new CEO reportedly extended longer than initially anticipated. The company's release emphasizes that Greeley and Karp will collaborate to maintain stability for authors, agents, and staff during this period of transition.
