NIGHT OF FURY LEAVES EIGHT YOUNGSTERS DEAD
Shamar Elkins, 31, stands accused of orchestrating a brutal rampage Sunday morning in Shreveport, Louisiana, that resulted in the deaths of seven of his own children and a nephew. The violence unfolded during a domestic dispute with his wife, Shaneiqua Pugh. Authorities reported that Elkins appeared to act alone in the killings, which began around 5:55 a.m. at a West 79th Street residence. Many of the young victims were apparently shot while asleep. The incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years.
FATHER'S DISTURBING CALL PRECEDES SLAUGHTER
Hours before the fatal shootings, Elkins made a troubling phone call to his parents. During this call, he reportedly discussed his wife's demand for a divorce. This revelation emerged as police pieced together the events leading up to the horrific act. Pugh had confided in her uncle, Lionel Pugh, about her intention to divorce Elkins, stating that the separation was proving difficult for him. Reports also surfaced of Pugh sustaining injuries, including fractured bones from a fall from a roof, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.

LEGAL TANGLES AND WEAPON POSSESSION
Further complicating the narrative are Elkins's prior encounters with law enforcement concerning firearms. He had previously been arrested for illegal weapon possession and for carrying a firearm on school property. A spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department indicated that a prior conviction would "likely have prohibited him from legally possessing firearms."
The suspect was eventually shot and killed by police following a pursuit that concluded in a neighboring town. Elkins also wounded Pugh and another woman during the course of the day's violence. The total number of children killed in the incident reached eight, comprising Elkins's seven children and one nephew.
