Shreveport, Louisiana - A spree of violence early Sunday left eight children dead, including seven believed to be the offspring of Shamar Elkins, 31. Elkins himself perished after a police pursuit culminating in a fatal encounter with officers. The carnage unfolded across multiple locations within Shreveport, a city now grappling with what officials are calling an unprecedented tragedy.
The incident, which authorities describe as a domestic violence rampage, began with a dispute between Elkins and his wife, the mother of at least some of the deceased children. Two women, including Elkins' wife, sustained critical injuries and are receiving treatment. The ages of the children killed span from 1 to approximately 14 years old. Some reports indicate that children attempted to flee the scene.
Police spokesperson Chris Bordelon confirmed that the shooting occurred across two residences. The chase that led to Elkins' death involved a vehicle he had allegedly carjacked at gunpoint. No officers were injured during the pursuit or subsequent confrontation.

"This is a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we've ever had in Shreveport," said Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux. "We all mourn for these families."
The investigation is being handled by multiple law enforcement agencies. Officials have stated they were unaware of any prior domestic violence incidents involving Elkins. The superintendent of schools acknowledged the incident's impact on the community. Governor Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill have issued statements expressing grief and offering prayers.
