Alexis Saelemaekers, who spent a season at AS Roma, voiced his dismay regarding the boos he encountered from the Giallorossi faithful upon his return to the Olimpico stadium. The Belgian winger, now with Bologna, indicated that the fans' reaction seemed to stem from a misunderstanding of his intentions during his tenure.
Saelemaekers stated he gave his all for the club and expressed regret that fans interpreted his attitude as being against them. He emphasized that he received a significant amount from his time in Rome, implying a reciprocal relationship was not fully appreciated by the supporters.
Saelemaekers, on loan from AC Milan last season before a permanent move to Bologna, acknowledged a "love-hate relationship" with the Roman fanbase. He suggested that while he was determined to contribute to bringing Roma "back where they belong," the future of his career was not solely within his control.

Despite the negative reception, Saelemaekers also conveyed gratitude for the messages received after undergoing surgery for a fractured ankle. He shared a positive outlook, vowing to "come back stronger."
Previously, upon his departure from the club in July 2025, Saelemaekers bid farewell to Roma, calling the experience "unforgettable" and thanking the fans for their "affection, warmth, and support." He mentioned initial setbacks due to injury but insisted his "heart was always there, next to the team."
