Ryanair has secured jet fuel at roughly half the prevailing market rate, yet continues to signal potential fare increases to passengers booking flights later this year. The airline asserts it holds "almost zero concerns" regarding its immediate fuel supplies across Europe, citing the discovery of alternative fuel sources. This contrasts with a previous period of significant concern about supply, now apparently alleviated.
Despite this insulation from immediate price shocks due to its hedging strategies, Ryanair is still cautioning travellers. Chief Executive Michael O'Leary stated that while current summer bookings are flat compared to last year, with prices consequently holding steady, future bookings might see upward adjustments. This projected rise is reportedly linked to ongoing uncertainty surrounding fuel availability, particularly concerning the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The company's robust 'fuel hedging' policy, which locks in future fuel purchases at pre-determined prices, largely shields Ryanair from the immediate impact of market volatility. This strategy is cited as a primary reason for its confidence amidst a turbulent aviation landscape.

While Ryanair appears well-positioned, other European airlines are reportedly struggling with elevated fuel costs. Some carriers have already begun cutting flights and implementing price hikes. Lufthansa, for instance, has reduced short-haul operations significantly to conserve fuel. O'Leary has previously warned that airlines failing to adapt to high fuel prices, particularly if they remain around $150 a barrel through the summer, could face bankruptcy, a situation he suggested could ultimately benefit Ryanair.
Earlier this year, concerns about jet fuel supply to the UK were noted, though the situation is now described as improved. Reports suggest that Ryanair has completed the integration of its Boeing 737 Max 8-200 aircraft into its fleet, reaching a total of 647 planes.
