WASHINGTON D.C. – The waters of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool are undergoing a transformation, acquiring a new coating described as "American flag blue." President Donald Trump announced on Thursday his administration's plan to resurface the pool's bottom, directly atop its existing stone structure. This intervention, drawing comparisons to swimming pool construction, signifies a broader push for aesthetic overhauls across the capital.
The core of the renovation involves pouring a new surface material onto the pool's stone floor, with the explicit intention of coloring it blue. Trump cited the inspiration stemming from his background as a real estate developer, estimating he built over 100 swimming pools. The project aims to address issues of perceived uncleanliness and leakage within the historic basin.
The scale of the Reflecting Pool is considerable, spanning over 300,000 square feet and reportedly equivalent in length to about 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Its dimensions are cited as approximately 2,200 feet long, 167 feet wide, and between 1.5 to 2 feet deep.

This renovation is presented as part of a wider series of beautification efforts championed by the President. Other proposed and ongoing projects include overhauling the Kennedy Center, constructing a "gigantic triumphal arch" across the Potomac River, and repainting the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The White House has indicated these renovations are a passion project, intended to enhance the appearance of federal sites.

The resurfacing of the Reflecting Pool is not an isolated event but part of a consistent pattern of alterations to the capital's visual landscape. These efforts have involved changes to the White House grounds, including replacing the Rose Garden grass with white stone and paving over areas for new patios. Interior modifications have also been reported, such as work on the Lincoln Bedroom's bathroom and re-marbling of the Palm Room.
