Ubisoft has officially unveiled Rayman Legends Retold, a fresh take on the beloved 2013 platformer, set to launch on October 1st. This reimagining introduces a significant visual overhaul, shifting from the original's 2D aesthetic to a full 3D presentation. The developers state this change is intended to bridge the visual storytelling of earlier Rayman titles with the established side-scrolling gameplay of Legends.

The core of Rayman Legends Retold remains the fast-paced platforming, precise jumping, secret passages, musical levels, and local co-op for up to four players, all while adopting a complete 3D art style. This strategic move by Ubisoft aims to reintroduce one of its most recognizable game entries to a new audience and, perhaps, revitalize interest in the franchise. The original voice actor for Rayman, David Gasman, is also returning, a nod to the series' long-standing appeal.

The Retold edition promises a wealth of new content, including narrative twists and reimagined levels. Notably, sequences featuring dragon riding, reminiscent of classic rail shooter segments, have been incorporated. The game's iconic musical levels are also being updated with original compositions. Two editions will be available: the Standard Edition, containing the base game, and the Deluxe Edition, which bundles the base game with a "Retro Pack" offering four costumes for key characters and an in-game concept art gallery.

This remake arrives as a celebration of the franchise's 30th anniversary. While the shift to 3D is the most prominent alteration, developers assert that the game's foundational elements—its accessible controls, fluid movement, vibrant art direction, energetic atmosphere, and strong soundtrack—are being meticulously preserved. The project has been described as a method to revisit what made Rayman special and to present that experience to a new generation of players.

The Rayman series, which began with a side-scrolling platformer, has seen numerous spin-offs and iterations over the years. These include titles like Rayman Origins, which was remastered and included in the original Rayman Legends, and a variety of mobile games and puzzle titles. A planned 3D Rayman game was reportedly canceled following disappointing sales of Rayman Legends. The franchise also branched into educational software and derivative games featuring the Raving Rabbids.
