PORTLAND, ME – A local entertainment venue, known for its destructive diversions, is introducing a new "scream room" alongside its existing rage rooms and paint splatter studios. Mayhem Portland, situated at 52 Alder Street in the former Public Works building, is developing this latest addition to cater to what organizers describe as "built-up frustration." The venue already provides spaces where patrons can smash breakable items or engage in artistic chaos with paint.

The concept of a "scream room" appears designed to offer an alternative, or perhaps complementary, outlet for emotional release. While specific details on the "scream room" functionality are sparse, its development follows the establishment of Mayhem's core services. The venue opened its doors in late 2025, with reports from September, October, and November of that year detailing its arrival.

The establishment of Mayhem Portland, which took an estimated three years from concept to reality for its founder, Taylor, focuses on providing "high-energy fun" through "controlled destruction." Patrons can engage in activities such as wielding sledgehammers or using miscellaneous tools to break provided items within dedicated rage rooms. The paint splatter studio offers a different form of expressive release.

The business has navigated operational adjustments, including reduced hours and closure on Tuesdays and Thursdays, though it notes inquiries for off-hours bookings are possible via email. Operating hours have been noted as varying, with some sources indicating availability on weekends and Tuesdays, while others show longer evening hours on certain weekdays.

Mayhem Portland emerged in the city's West Bayside neighborhood, occupying a space previously utilized by Public Works. The venture was established with multiple rage rooms and paint splatter areas, aiming to provide a safe environment for individuals to vent stress and "let out all of your bottled emotions." The introduction of the "scream room" signifies an evolution in the types of stress-relief activities offered by the establishment.
