Capcom has officially announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch on September 25, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Steam, and Epic Games. A free playable demo is also available immediately for players to experience a portion of the game.
Gameplay and Features
The upcoming title revives the classic 'saber action' gameplay that defined the series. Developers confirm that core mechanics, such as the iconic soul absorption system and the timing-based counter-attack known as Issen, will be retained. This is positioned as a deliberate choice to satisfy long-time fans while attracting a new audience.

The game places players in the shoes of Miyamoto Musashi, a historical Japanese samurai, who wields an "Oni Gauntlet" granting supernatural abilities.
Unlike some contemporary action games, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is explicitly stated not to be a 'souls-like', aiming for a more balanced, less punitive difficulty.
The available demo allows players to explore the Kiyomizu-dera temple and face off against Sasaki Ganryu, a legendary rival.
Platform Availability and Language Support
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be accessible on major current-generation platforms. The game is slated for release on:
PlayStation 5
Xbox Series X|S
Windows
Steam®
Epic Games
The title will offer extensive language support, including Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Polish, Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Latin American Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean.

Demo Specifics
The free demo, playable only on PlayStation 5 at present, serves multiple purposes for players. It allows them to gauge the combat feel and difficulty, secure an exclusive in-game item—the Kubi Akari charm—and experience the updated visuals and gameplay designed for current-gen hardware. Notably, progression from the demo will not carry over to the full game.
Background
The Onimusha series, developed by Capcom, debuted with a distinct blend of historical fantasy and supernatural combat. The primary antagonist faction in the series are the "Genma," against whom the protagonists wield the power of the "Oni." Key characters, such as Samanosuke Akechi, were notably inspired by and voiced by actor Takeshi Kaneshiro in earlier installments. This new release marks a significant return for a franchise that has been dormant for approximately twenty years, aiming to bridge nostalgia with modern gaming expectations.
